How does CranioSacral Therapy Work?

How can it help me?

I believe that our body often knows what it needs in order to heal and self-correct - this knowledge is our Inner Wisdom. However, our negative thoughts, beliefs and emotions often get in the way of the healing process. I am honored to hold space for my client and work along side of them as I help to facilitate their healing from within. Meeting the client where they are "in the healing process" is essential in every session and is an important element to helping them find balance in thier life. Since every client is different, creating a bridge between different modalities can be useful in my sessions.  Along with CranioSacral Therapy, many clients also benefit from Gentle Fascia Release, Energy Therapy, Reiki, Breath Work, Guided Easy Yoga Poses and Image Relaxation Therapy.  These can all play an important role in recognizing the root of an issue as well as allowing space for recovery and healing to begin.  Healing restrictions deep in the body can make a difference between feeling okay and feeling amazing.  Healing from within and creating balance  - mind, body and spirit is the goal of every session.

CranioSacral Therapy is a light-touch, full clothed therapy that works directly with your nervous system and can create dramatic improvements in your life.  It releases tensions deep in the body to relieve pain, stress and dysfunction while improving whole-body health and well-being. It is a highly effective and well researched form of bodywork that helps to identify and unwind tension patterns that are often at the core of illness (dis-ease) chronic pain and unresolved injury (physical and emotional).

Few body structures have more influence over your health and well-being than your central nervous system.  And few body systems have more impact on your central nervous system than the craniosacral system - the soft tissues and fluid that protect your brain and spinal cord. Each day you endure stresses and strains and your body absorbs them.  But your body can only handle so much tension before the tissues begin to tighten and potentially affect the brain and spinal cord and over all health and well-being.

CranioSacral Therapy releases these tensions to allow the entire body to relax and self-correct.  Using a light touch, practitioners evaluate your internal environment.  They then use distinctive non-invasive techniques to release any restrictions they may find. As the body releases into a deep relaxation state, healing can begin.

The CranioSacral System is composed of bones, membranes and fluid that surround, protect and nourish the brain and spinal cord.  The central nervous system, which encompasses the brain and spinal cord, controls and directs all of our body processes.  Inside the vertebral column, the brain and spinal cord are surrounded by membranes of connective tissue.  These membranes contain the cerebrospinal fluid, which bathes, protects and nourishes the tissues of the central nervous system, just as blood nourishes the other cells and tissues of our bodies.  In addition, these membranes also form a sleeve around each spinal nerve as it leaves the protection of the vertebral column.  Like all other connective tissue, these membranes are highly pliable and flexible until force is applied to them.  Part of thier job is to protect this vulnerable area from impact.  Trauma from an outside force can cause contractions within these tissues, setting into motion restrictions within the tissues of the body, as well as the craniosacral system. This is our bodies way of trying to protect us from further harm.  Because of this, CranioSacral Therapy utilizes very light pressure, usually less than the weight of a nickel, to avoid engaging further resistance of the tissue.  By working with the body rather than against it, CranioSacral Therapy is capable of effectively making profound changes without pain or discomfort.

CranioSacral Therapy improves your body's ability to take better care of you.  It helps relieve a full spectrum of pain, illness and dysfunction including:

  • Stress and Tension Related Disorders
  • Chronic Neck and Back Pain
  • Migraines and Headaches
  • Vertigo
  • Motor-Coordination Impairments
  • Brain and Spinal Cord Injuries
  • Chronic Fatigue
  • Fibromyalgia
  • TMJ Syndrome
  • Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder
  • Anxiety/Depression - Nervous System Disorders
  • Orthopedic Problems
  • Learning Disabilities
  • And Many More

Clients are asked to wear loose fitting clothing when possible as it will allow your body easy transition as well as give your body freedom of movement during the session. The Therapist and client will discuss any health issues and concerns before the session begins. For the duration of the treatment you will lay on a comfortable padded table.  If you are unable to lie on your back, we will make necessary arrangements. The Therapist begins by touching various parts of your body to monitor the rhythm of the fluid that is flowing around your central nervous system. By using our hands to carefully listen to the body, the Therapist is able to locate areas of weak fluid flow or tissue motion. The Therapist can trace those areas of weakness throughout the body to the original source of dysfunction.  Delicate manual techniques are then used to release those problem areas and improve the form and function of your central nervous system.  A CranioSacral Therapy session generally last up to an hour.  It can be used alone or integrated with other therapies to create powerful effects.

CranioSacral sessions are as individual as clients are themselves. Often times clients become deeply relaxed, or they may fall asleep during a treatment.  Every session is different, many clients relax into a dream like state.  Some may recall hidden memories, while others might talk throughout the session and may release tension through dialogue.  Our bodies can hold trauma, both emotional and physical.  Through the process of evaluating your body's current state and through gentle light touch therapy, your Therapist is able to location your body's restrictions and aid in your healing process.   Most clients feel relaxed and renewed when they leave the session.

The power of touch can relax and heal the body, mind & spirit. Integrative Massage gives us the opportunity to slow down from our busy lives, take care of ourselves, and replenish. In turn, we can benefit from a more grounded, balanced and healthy life. Massage increases our bodies blood circulation and promotes healing on many different levels. Statistics show that those who receive frequent massages are more relaxed, healthy and productive.  Whether it is a gentle Swedish Massage, Therapeutic Massage, Fascia Release, Deep Tissue, Reiki, or Empathetic Touch, we can meet your massage needs with skill, intuition and a nurturing approach.

Simply defined, grief is the normal and natural reaction to significant and emotional loss of any kind.  Divorce, death, financial issues, health issues and pet loss are just a few of the many loss that can effect our emotions and leave one broken hearted. Grief is also defined as the conflicting feelings caused by the end of or change in a familiar pattern of behavior.  Therefore, grief can also take the form of loss of trust events, changing jobs, moving residence, changing schools, retirement, marriage, pregnancy, holidays, empty nest, addictions and many more.

Unfortunately most of the information passed on within our society about grief is misguided.  Many of us have been told "just keep busy", "be strong", "don't feel bad", "just give it time" - although these are often thought of as well intentioned,  these comments tend to lack the ability to truly help one heal and recover from a loss. Since we do not have other information to rely on, we continue to follow these guidelines to recovery. As we attempt to put our losses behind us we become frustrated - only to find we can not moved beyond the pain.

The Grief Recovery Method is a structured program consisting of an 8-Week Group Session or 7-Week One on One Session. It is designed to show you a new and gentler way to understand what grief truly is, and how to take new actions to aid you along life's journey in moving beyond your loss in a loving and healthy way. This process has been used by facilitators  and individuals for over 25 years and has helped people find a new way to re-build their lives.  Those who have once felt 'stuck' or unable to move beyond their grief, have now found a new way to approach each day with hope and new aspirations.  We would never ask one to "forget a loss or just get over it"- as there is a distinct difference between "getting over" and "getting complete". Once one feels complete - healing can begin. We welcome you to join us in a Grief Recovery Session.

Integrating Equissage, Masterson Method and CranioSacral Techniques provides a unique method of equine bodywork.  It provides your horse with the ability to release deep and accumulated pain and tension within muscles and connective tissues.  It is my goal to improve movement and mobility more than to work specifically with the muscle itself.  It has been proven that if you stay under the horse's threshold of bracing and resistance while asking for movement, the horse has an opportunity to release restrictions.  This bodywork focuses on three main junctions: The Poll-Atlas, Neck-Shoulder-Withers (Cervical-Thoracic C7-T1) and The Hind-End (Sacroiliac).  Although all horses are different and some choose not to show a visible release of tension, results can often be seen while working on the horse.  Subtle releases such as; blinking, twitching/quivering of the lips, change in breathing and sighing.  Larger releases can be; snorting/sneezing, licking/chewing, stretching, flexing, yawning, head shaking and fidgeting.  The touch is light and purposeful with the intention of allowing your horse to release tension.  As the horse begins to trust the process, he lets go more readily.  This integrated bodywork is something you do with your horse, not to your horse. The results can make a difference in performance and improve overall communication and connection between you and your horse. Results can be seen in performance, communication and the overall demeanor of the horse.
